Houseboats are the soul of this picturesque tourist spot in South India. alleppey, the city of lakes, canals and backwaters, is world famous for boat cruising. Houseboats, as the name suggests, consist of every single facility that a house should have. Varying from 60 feet to 120 feet, these houseboats have proper air-conditioned bedrooms, bathrooms, dining facilities etc. These are built of eco-friendly bamboo poles, coconut fiber ropes, bamboo mats, coir carpets etc. Exploring the natural beauty in Kettuvalloms (houseboats) is actually a bewildering experience.

Traveling through calm waterways and watching the enriched aquatic life can be a relaxing experience. The idea of these house boats originated from big commercial boats which were used for the transportation of rice, coconut and other commodities. Gradually, people started using these boats for traveling through backwaters for picnic. The major plus point was the size of these boats. These could carry several people at one time to the marvelous journey of lakes, canals and lagoons. With the changing times, these giant boats met with renovations and luxurious facilities and Houseboats came into existence in 1990s. Today, these are considered the best way to travel through waterways.

Kettuvalloms (houseboats) are furnished with an open lounge, one or two bath attached bedrooms and a kitchen (The sewage is never flushed into the lake but is stored in tanks to keep the environment clean and green. It is later pumped into the municipal sewerage system). These have private balconies with chairs. Generally built with two floors, these houseboats have sun-decks. Traditional lanterns give a soothing effect in the dark. Every houseboat is managed by a crew of 3 men, usually a cook, guide and oarsman. You can savour Kerala's specialties, including awesome marine food. Kettuvalloms can simply be symbolized as “Palace on Water”.

These boats are available on rent. You can hire a houseboat for a full day if you are on a trip with big family, relatives or a group of friends or colleagues. This journey is perfect in terms of introducing you to crystal clear waterways, their flora & fauna, their life patterns and greenery along the backwaters.
